Enhancing Quality Education in Mozambique Involves a Collective Effort
Mozambique has made significant strides in improving education, with the government introducing free education from preschool to grade nine in 2018. However, despite these efforts, the quality of education remains a challenge, particularly in the north and central regions. Many students struggle to complete primary school, and girls are more likely to drop out than boys. Furthermore, only 5% of students can read and understand a simple text by the end of third grade.
The World Bank and its partners are working with the Mozambican government to address these issues through projects, research, and policy dialogue. The focus is on improving the education system at every stage, from early childhood to higher education. To achieve this, Mozambique needs well-trained and motivated teachers, safe and conducive learning environments, and adequate educational resources, including textbooks.
Textbooks play a crucial role in teaching and learning, especially in the early years of education. The World Bank has partnered with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to increase access to affordable textbooks. Efforts have focused on reducing textbook costs, promoting competition, and improving the efficiency of textbook production. As a result, textbook costs have decreased by 41% between 2008 and 2015, enabling more students to access educational materials.
While textbooks are essential, they are just one aspect of improving education quality. The World Bank is also working on other priorities, such as increasing enrollment, improving learning outcomes, making schools more resilient to climate change, and promoting gender equality. To achieve these goals, partnerships between governments, stakeholders, and civil society are crucial.
Improving education quality in Mozambique requires a collective effort from all segments of society. The World Bank aims to promote transparency, competitiveness, and integrity in all its projects, including education. By working together, we can create sustainable education projects that benefit all children. The World Bank has been supporting Mozambique's education sector for four decades and remains committed to helping the government achieve its education goals.
