Fiber-Optic Cable Damaged in Southern Finland
On Monday, a fiber-optic cable was damaged in Southern Finland during excavation work, according to police reports released on Tuesday. The cable, which connects Finland and Sweden, is owned by the Swedish digital infrastructure company GlobalConnect. The damage occurred at two separate points between the municipalities of Espoo and Vihti.
Authorities have stated that there is no indication of criminal activity related to the incidents. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the damage but have confirmed that the incidents were caused by construction work rather than any malicious intent. "There is no suspicion of any criminal offense in either case, as the damages were caused by excavation work. The police will not initiate a criminal investigation into either case," the police noted in a press release.
Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne emphasized the importance of taking data cable damage seriously. In a statement, she said, "It is important that we stay calm and find out what has happened. When we know, we can take appropriate action. In order to investigate these situations, it is important that the authorities and cable companies can work closely together. This time, both incidents seem to have been caused by construction work, which can sometimes damage cables."
The ministry's response highlights the need for collaboration between authorities and infrastructure companies to prevent future incidents and ensure the integrity of critical communication networks.
