David Luiz a surprise pick in Fifa’s World Team of Year 2014

Paris St Germain and Brazil defender David Luis was the surprise inclusion on Fifa’s 2014 Team of the Year announced at Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony.

The former Chelsea centre-half, who left the Premier League leaders last summer in a £50m deal, was part of the Brazil side that lost 7-1 to Germany in last year’s World Cup semi-final.

Neither Gareth Bale or Real Madrid teammate James Rodríguez made the list, while Manchester United’s record signing Angel Di María is the only player in the XI currently playing in England.

Three of Germany’s world champions made the line-up

The Team of the Year is voted by FifPro, the world players’ union, and included 23,383 votes from 58 countries.
