Arsenal's Olivier Giroud defends team-mates Jack Wilshere and Wojciech Szczesny over smoking

Olivier Giroud has again risked Arsene Wenger’s wrath by saying he can’t understand the fuss about players smoking, writes Steve Goodman in the Sunday People.

The France striker left his Arsenal boss Wenger fuming by missing a host of chances in Wednesday’s 3-1 Champions League home defeat by Monaco.

Now Giroud has defended team-mates Jack Wilshere and Wojciech Szczesny, who enraged Wenger after being caught lighting up.

Giroud said: “Everybody knows that lots of footballers smoke – there will be four or five in every team.

“Jack and Wojciech haven’t shocked me at all. Rugby players smoke as well.”

Giroud is angry at reports of the Gunners seeking a new striker. He added: “Things are said that p*** me off. When people talk about getting someone to play in my place I take it personally.

“I don’t feel inferior to Diego Costa or Sergio Aguero. I may not have such as famous name, but when it comes to goalscoring I’m right behind them.”
