10 Best Ugandan Foods
Uganda has a cuisine that no other African country can compete with. Most of the foods enjoyed by Ugandans have carbohydrates and they are traditionally prepared in a way that offers the best taste. These meals will be part of the adventure in Uganda. Besides the food, Uganda has fertile land that produces tasty fruits including pineapples, watermelons, mangoes, banana, papaya, oranges and more which also make very tasty cocktail juice. The different Uganda Food include cassava, sweet potatoes, matooke, posho prepared out of maize flour and many others and sauce is normally beans, meat, chicken, fish, g/nuts, silver fish, peas and many others and they are prepared in the following ways;
Luwombo
Luwombo describes a typical traditional way of preparing stewed chicken, beef and fish in the central part of Uganda. This Ugandan delicacy is prepared by wrapping the chicken, beef or fish in banana leaves together with vegetables and spices to make a thick stew. G-nut is also prepared as Luwombo and is much more thick and tasty than any other g-nut sauce you would ever eat.
Luwombo is believed to have been started by the personal chef of Kabaka Mwanga who was king of Buganda Kingdom in the late 19th century. This is the reason why is popular in Buganda kingdom and is in most cases prepared on special events like royal and marriage ceremonies and other celebrations.
Preparing Luwombo takes quite long hours but the taste is worth all the resources. You need to see and also participate in luwombo preparation and taste this appetizing meal. In Buganda, Luwombo is eaten mainly with matooke but you can as well eat with other foods like rice, sweet potatoes and others.
Ground nut sauce
Ground nut sauce is made out of red peanut which is cooked to form a thick sauce and Ugandans like to eat it with food like matooke and sweet potatoes. It can be cooked with dry fish, meat or silverfish and eggplants. Ugandans prepare it and allow it to have enough time on little fire when it is ready so that it gets creamy and produces oil on top.
Kalo- mingled millet flour
Kalo is consumed by almost all tribes in Uganda. It is one of the fastest foods to prepare because it just requires mixing the millet flour in boiling water and mingling it to come up with a thick substance that is accompanied with sauce like fish, chicken and other local sauces. It is a very delicious dish if the sauce is well prepared. It is also one of the dishes that do not miss on menus for special events like marriage ceremonies. Some tribes especially those of the eastern and northern mix the millet flour with cassava flour before starting to mingle and that becomes more delicious fro them.
Matooke
Matooke are east African highland bananas that originated from the great lakes region and are staple foods in Uganda and Tanzania among other countries in the neighborhood. Good quality of matooke is produced from the large plantations in the western and central regions of Uganda and in big quantifies and in west and Kilimajaro region in Tanzania. This type of bananas remain green when they are ready for harvesting and consumption and are traditionally prepared by steaming them in banana leaves and are served well smashed and soft. Steamed matooke is served with different kinds of sauce like chicken, beef, g-nut and others. Matooke can also be prepared as a combination of sauces and the result is known as ‘Katogo’.
Katogo
Katogo is a common word is Uganda during meal hours especially morning. The common katogo is that of matooke with either beans, meat, g-nuts or vegetables but matooke can also be replaced with cassava, sweet potatoes or Irish potatoes and it shall still come out perfect and very tasty.
