1. Chike and the River by Chinua Achebe
First published in 1966, this children's book tells a heroic tale of an 11 year old boy who overcomes fear and poverty to cross the river Niger.
2. How the Leopard Got Its Claws by Chinua Achebe and John Iroaganachi
Initially published in 1972. It narrates the happenings in an animal Kingdom. An angry leopard returns to claim his throne after being overthrown by a dog.

3. Mayowa and the Masquerades by Lola Shoneyin
A city boy goes to the village to visit his grandma. While there, he makes an unlikely friend and learns that there is more to life in the village.

4. Sugar Girl by Kola Onadipe
A happy go lucky girl goes missing from home and under ordeals first from the hands of a witch and then a hunter. This was made compulsory in many Nigerian schools.

5. The Drummer Boy by Cyprian Ekwensi
