15% of Venezuelans are willing to vote in opposition primaries
The Venezuelan opposition is working on the organization of primaries to choose a single candidate who would face dictator Nicolás Maduro in the 2024 elections, at a time when the opposition leadership is atomized and citizens are desperate.
Politics no longer dominates the center of the conversation in Venezuela, as it did some five years ago, but questions and concerns persist.
"They are very weak, very opportunistic, very personalistic leaders and as long as they don't correct these three conditions, truly, I don't think they represent any of us," Melín Navas, a self-employed worker, told the Voice of America , who has not yet decides whether to participate in the opposition primaries.
"We don't trust the government or the opposition. We think to trust the opposition, so what? What have they given us? The back. It's that there isn't an opposition candidate that you can say: 'Hey, I'm going to vote in the primaries!' There isn't," says Mario Montilla, a Venezuelan taxi driver.
«I believe that the country is not for egos. The country is here to be united, work together and make a proposal. We cannot continue with mantras, with slogans; but with a serious proposal to the citizen”, says María Gabriela Escovar, journalist, specialized in international politics.
The pollster Consultores 21 measured in June the intention of the electorate to vote in the opposition primaries, and found that between 12 and 16 percent are willing to participate in opposition elections.
"Those are around 3 million people," highlights the firm's director, Saúl Cabrera.
The percentage increases if Venezuelans abroad are allowed to vote and if the citizen perceives that the opposition will maintain the consensus, according to Consultores 21. Read More…
