7 Nigerian Porridge Recipes to Try Today
Porridge can be made using different grains or staples. Different localities and countries have their special porridges. Porridge is usually boiled, its consistency is soft and is served in a bowl. Porridges can be either sweet or savoury and our recipes below feature a mixture of sweet and savoury Nigerian porridge recipes.
Porridges can be easily eaten by both children and adults and in many cultures is a great food for the convalescent period. A warm bowl of porridge is a great comfort food to many peoples. The easiest thing about these recipes is that they are all one pot meals.

1. Sweet acha porridge
Acha also known as fonio is popular cereal especially in northern Nigeria. A cup can swell in the pot to serve up to four persons. Easy and quick to prepare. The porridge involves slow boiling for a few minutes. Serve with milk and sweetener of choice. Pro tip: Add groundnuts to your porridge and thank us later.

2. Savoury acha porridge (Gwote acha)
Acha is great with milk, but twice as better when cooked in savoury form. Its a low calorie cereal, and when cooked with protein like goat or chicken meat and a few vegetables, you have a well balanced healthy meal.

3. Beans porridge
Beans porridge is the King and Queen of all porridges. When prepared well, it is really the best thing ever. Beans is mainly carbohydrate but has quality protein as well. So beans by itself, is a balanced meal. You can pair with fried plantains or with garri. It is perfect any way.

4. Millet porridge
Millet is known as gyero in hausa, achara in Igbo, okababa in Yoruba and amine in tiv, to name a few Nigerian languages. It is popular as a weaning food for babies. It can be made extremely smooth (by sieving out the chaff) or rough, together with the chaff. After grinding the grains, it is allowed to ferment for a bit, making it healthier. After preparation, sweeten with tamarind or dates or any other sweetener of choice.
