A Guide to Hiking The Laugavegur Trail

The Laugavegur Trail is one of Iceland's most renowned hiking routes, stretching approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. This trail offers stunning landscapes, geothermal hot springs, and a unique opportunity to experience the country’s diverse natural beauty. Typically, hikers take 4 to 6 days to complete the trail, making it suitable for various skill levels, though it is considered moderate to challenging due to the varying terrain.

Trail Highlights

i. Landmannalaugar: Start your journey in this geothermal wonderland, known for its colorful rhyolite mountains and natural hot springs. It’s a great idea to take some time to soak in the warm waters before hitting the trail.

ii. Hrafntinnusker: As you hike towards Hrafntinnusker, you’ll encounter a landscape filled with obsidian and geothermal activity. The Hrafntinnusker hut offers stunning views and a cozy place to rest.

iii. Álftavatn: On the second day, the trail leads you past beautiful lakes and wetlands to Álftavatn, where you can camp or stay overnight. This area is perfect for fishing and birdwatching.

iv. Emstrur (Botnar): Continuing on, you’ll reach Emstrur, where the black sands of the Múlagljúfur canyon provide breathtaking views of glaciers and mountains. The Emstrur hut is a popular stop for hikers.

v. Þórsmörk: The final leg of the hike takes you into the lush valley of Þórsmörk, surrounded by towering mountains and glaciers. This area is rich in flora and fauna, making it an ideal place to explore and unwind after your trek.

Preparing for the Hike

When preparing for the Laugavegur Trail, it’s essential to wear sturdy hiking boots and dress in layers to accommodate changing weather conditions. A waterproof jacket, warm layers, and a hat are crucial, as Icelandic weather can be unpredictable. Carry enough food for the duration of your hike, as supplies are limited along the trail, and ensure you have a water filter or purification tablets since water sources are available.

Accommodation options include several mountain huts along the trail that require advance booking, especially during peak season. Camping is also an option, but be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles to protect the environment. While the trail is well-marked, having a map and compass or a GPS device is advisable for navigation.

Safety Tips

Be aware of the weather, as conditions can change rapidly. Regularly check forecasts and be prepared to turn back if conditions become dangerous. Always stay on marked paths to protect the fragile environment, and consider hiking with a partner or group for safety. If you’re hiking solo, inform someone of your plans and expected return.

The Laugavegur Trail offers a remarkable hiking experience that showcases the stunning beauty of Iceland’s landscapes. With proper preparation, you can enjoy an unforgettable adventure filled with breathtaking views, unique geological features, and the tranquility of nature. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a beginner, the Laugavegur Trail has something for everyone.
