A powerful earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale rocked the cities of Lahore, Islamabad, and Peshawar, causing widespread panic among the residents who hurriedly evacuated their homes and buildings. This moderate seismic event struck several Pakistani cities on Tuesday, compelling people to swiftly exit their residences and offices.
In the province of Punjab, the tremors were distinctly felt in Shakar Garh, Chichawatni, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Hafizabad, Zafarwal, and Murree. The quake also affected areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, namely Abbottabad, Swabi, and Swat. Additionally, the tremors reverberated through Azad Jammu and Kashmir, specifically in Bagh, DhirKot, and Muzaffarabad.
Sarah Batool Haider, a journalist based in Islamabad, recounted the brief but distressing experience as people hastily vacated their workplaces due to the quake. Haider expressed her concern, highlighting that it was the second instance of an earthquake striking the capital within a short span of time.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake originated at 1:04 PM and had a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter of the quake was determined to be in Eastern Kashmir, with coordinates at a longitude of 75.97 E and a latitude of 33.32 N.
