Abba Refutes Possibility of Mamma Mia 3 and 50th Anniversary Eurovision Performance in Sweden in 2024
Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, the talented members of Abba, have dashed the hopes of their fans by ruling out any potential reunion performance at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in 2024 and dismissing the idea of a third Mamma Mia film.
At the Eurovision 2023 final held in Liverpool, Loreen, Sweden's representative, achieved an extraordinary feat by securing her second victory with the captivating pop ballad "Tattoo." This triumph sealed Sweden as the host country for the next edition of the song contest in 2024, marking the 50th anniversary of Abba's historic win in 1974 with their iconic pop anthem "Waterloo." Many enthusiasts speculated that the disco legends might reunite for a spectacular performance at the grand final.
However, during an interview on Newsnight, Ulvaeus and Andersson made it clear that they have no intentions of performing or appearing together on stage, as they simply lack the enthusiasm for it.
"I have no desire to do it. And if I don't want to, neither do the others. It's the same for all four of us. If someone says no, it means no," explained Andersson during the BBC news program's episode on Thursday, May 25.
Ulvaeus added, "We can celebrate Abba's 50th anniversary without having to be on stage."
Abba, consisting of Andersson, Ulvaeus, Agnetha Fältskog, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, derived its name from the acronym formed by the initials of the members' first names.
Despite maintaining a friendly relationship over the years, the band officially disbanded in 1982 and their last public performance took place in 1986. In 2016, Swedish media reported that they sang together at a private party.
In addition to dismissing the possibility of an Eurovision performance, Abba also casts doubts on the production of a third Mamma Mia film.
"People want it. Universal wants it. Judy Craymer [producer] wants it," explained Andersson. However, without significant changes to the franchise, such as a new setting or an exceptionally compelling script, Andersson firmly declared, "There won't be another Mamma Mia film."
