About Canti e Cunti
Canti e Cunti are a Sicilian folk group born in 2015 thanks to the meeting of some musicians from the same Ibleo territory: Ferla, a village in Syracuse's province.
The most obvious aspect that comes out of the performances concerns the sense of the "Mediterraneanness" of the songs that does not only concern the harmonious use of certain arrangements, but also the tenor of the lyrics of the songs that refer to the Gallo-Italic dialect.
The songs are based on the tradition of Sicilian storytellers, which were especially noticeable on large festivals, at fairs, at times of wheat harvesting or on other occasions, when people were more available and could contribute financially to their livelihood.
The main topics dealt with take their cue from the ethnographic and popular memory of the Hyblaean villages and more generally of peasant Sicily: the powerful, love, stories of passionate murder, adventures of heroes, Holy Week, the unity of Italy and the northern colonialism on the South.
