Alicia Keys Releases “If I Aint Got You” Cover For Netflix’s “Queen Charlotte”
Alicia Keys, a renowned singer whose voice has long been cherished in the Black community since her debut album in 2001, has released a fresh rendition of her beloved song "If I Ain't Got You" to commemorate its 20th anniversary. Netflix enlisted Keys to recreate the track for their latest series, "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." The show is notable for featuring orchestral covers of contemporary pop and R&B tunes. This reimagined version of the song showcases a captivating new rendition, performed by a global orchestra consisting entirely of women of color, comprising over 70 talented musicians.
The remade song will be included in the soundtrack of the show, which will also feature instrumental covers of modern pop classics by Beyonce, SZA, Whitney Houston, and more.
The accompanying music video for the new song highlights the power and talent of the all-women's orchestra. Notable personalities such as Ofentse, Rimon, Cherrie, and Alicia Awa make cameo appearances in the video.
"Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story," the new Netflix series, has received criticism since its recent release. Despite the backlash, the show quickly rose to the top spot and garnered nearly 150 million viewers within its debut week. Some viewers have expressed concern about its historical accuracy, particularly in portraying the queen as a Black woman when, in reality, the historical Queen Charlotte was white.
In response to the criticism, show creator Shonda Rhimes defends the series, asserting that it is not as historically inaccurate as some claim. During an interview with EW, she remarked, "I always find it intriguing how eager people are to disprove someone's racial background. It seems to be a significant preoccupation for many individuals. While I don't fully comprehend it, I conducted extensive research with the assistance of a brilliant historian. This allowed me to delve into the historical context so that I could be aware when deviating from it intentionally or transforming a tiny historical detail into something different."
