All about the clean girl trend
But how do you become a clean girl and is it as easy as it looks?
Beauty expert and hairdresser Sandhra Johnsson explains.
Shiny skin, no make-up look and hair in a tight knot. "Clean girl aesthetic" is the microtrend that hit big this spring. On the popular social media platform TikTok, the hashtag "CleanGirl" has 476 million views.
Beauty expert Sandhra Johnsson describes it as a sporty and fresh look, but also as an elitist ideal that can be difficult to achieve.
- It's a simple trend that everyone can take part in. But there are very few who end up looking the way the trend advocates. If you don't have the "perfect complexion", a killer skin care routine is required and it quickly becomes expensive. So it's not an inclusive aesthetic, even if many make it sound that way.
What is a clean girl look?
The clean girl trend is an extension of several different trends, including "No makeup make-up" and "Model off duty". The first is about putting on make-up so that you look without make-up and the second about imitating models who don't work but are just "everyday stylish".
According to Sandhra Johnsson, the model Hailey Bieber is the one who best embodies the clean girl ideal.
- The look is clearly inspired by celebrities who manage to look whole and clean effortlessly. Visually, it's an effortless look, which is of course very curated. It's about having a super fresh "dewy" skin, like you just got out of the shower. You must have minimalist make-up, have your hair perfectly in place, gold rings in your ears and a matcha coffee in your hand.
Last July, the creator "Xolizahbeauty" posted a video on TikTok , which became the first viral "clean makeup" clip. In the video, she shows how to do makeup like a clean girl, while saying:
“You know those girls who always look so clean? Their skin is always shiny and their lips are always shiny. And they never ever look like they're wearing too much makeup?”
The creator behind the clip was not the one who coined the term or invented the trend. But Sandhra Johnsson thinks that her words put the finger on what the ideal is all about.
Desired ideal or sales trick?
In both fashion and beauty, the interest in health has become increasingly greater. Sandhra Johnsson believes that this is one of the reasons why the clean girl trend has become so popular.
- It's a stripped down look, which feels influenced by the pandemic and all the sports trends that have been. But it also feels like a given backlash after years of conspicuous consumption, where big brands and visible logos have been popular. Today, it is not enough to be able to afford to buy an expensive garment in order to "keep track". It is rather about a more subtle materialism and then a different type of knowledge is required.
