Almost 90% of games sold in the UK in 2022 were digital – ERA
According to ERA, sales of physical games are declining every year
Digital sales accounted for almost nine out of ten video games sold in the UK in 2022, according to a trade organization.
The Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) said 89.5% of games sold were digital downloads and the remaining 10.5% were physical copies.
About 30% of revenue comes from mobile apps distributed digitally.
In total, the gambling industry accounted for £4.7 billion in revenue in the UK in 2022 – more than film, TV or music.
The numbers mean that gamers are much more likely to download games through their console or PC rather than waiting for delivery or going to a store.
ERA chief executive Kim Bayley said gaming is the “often unheralded leader” of the entertainment market.
“While the 2.3% growth was slower than video or music, the scale is huge – and in terms of innovation and excitement, it continues to set the pace for the entire entertainment sector,” she said.
“Industry Benchmark”
Unlike the music industry, where the Official Chart Company counts the exact sales figures for digital songs, the numbers in the gaming industry are estimates.
Digital stores from gaming titans like PlayStation and Valve aren’t required to release their sales numbers – but the ERA estimates, provided by market research firm Omdia, are “the industry benchmark,” Ms Bayley told BBC News. Read More…
