Alexander Povetkin rolled the dice and for his ambition he took some hellacious shots to eventually leave him struggling to rediscover his senses.
The Russia landed several bombs in a positive start at Wembley Stadium, but AJ's brutal combinations told in the seventh round.
A jab was followed up by a vicious left hook and a straight right down the pipe to send Povetkin sprawling.
After barely getting to his feet, Povetkin was left helpless against the ropes as the referee quickly rushed in after several punches half landed.
Stitches could be seen above his left eye, whilst Povetkin sported two black eyes.
It was seemingly worth the risk though, given the trouble Joshua experienced early on.
And despite that success, each judge had him behind at the time of the stoppage, meaning the Russian was justified in his approach to try and stun Joshua with a stoppage, given how unlikely it would have been to claim a points win.
At 39 years old, there will be doubts as to whether he will continue his career, but that showing will bring back fans to his next fight.
An all-action style would mesh well with a number of heavyweights around the world.
Joshua will now rest up, before preparing for his April 13 bout back at Wembley - likely to be against Deontay Wilder or Dillian Whyte.
