At the beginning of the school year, a strike in 500 schools, classes for 30 minutes
President of the Union of Educational Workers of Serbia (USPRS), Jasna Janković, said today that about 500 member schools of the Union will participate in the announced strike on the first day of the school year, September 1, in which classes will be shortened by half an hour.
Janković stated for Tanjug that educators have a lot of problems, but one of the biggest is low wages, which is why they are asking for a 20 percent salary increase.
"We have a problem finding young people who want to work in education." We believe that one of the reasons is salary and that a 20 percent increase would bring us slightly above the national average, which we believe is not too much of a request," said Janković.
He states that the educators also demand payment of the remaining debt of 50,000 dinars, changes in laws, regulations and instructions in the field of education along with social dialogue, as well as a reduction in the number of students to a maximum of 24 in the class.
When it comes to the request to reduce the number of students in classes, Janković says that the problem is that there are almost no students in smaller areas, while there are more than 33 in urban areas, and that the reduction would be aimed at achieving better quality education.
Janković said that out of 830 member schools of the Union, 500 will participate in the strike, in which classes will last half an hour, and classes, she points out, will not be made up on Saturdays. Read More…
