Austria Appoints Alexander Schriebl as New Head Coach of Women's National Team
The Austria national women's football team has officially appointed Alexander Schriebl as their new head coach, succeeding former player Irene Fuhrmann, who departed by mutual agreement at the end of 2024. Schriebl, who previously managed FC Bergheim, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the role.
Having achieved his UEFA Pro Licence in 2021, Schriebl began his managerial career in the men’s regional league with SV Seekirchen before transitioning to the ADMIRAL Women’s Bundesliga and FC Bergheim in January 2024. His playing career includes 96 appearances for SV Austria Salzburg and SC Austria Lustenau, where he notably participated in the UEFA Cup during the 2003/04 season.
In his statement, Schriebl expressed gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “Being a team leader of the women’s national team is a great privilege. I would first like to thank FC Bergheim and FC Red Bull Salzburg, as well as Peter Schöttel, for this opportunity. I am looking forward to the upcoming challenges with a team that has achieved a lot in the past and has a strong character.”
Sporting director Peter Schöttel emphasized the need for new energy within the team, stating, “Now is a good time for us to set new impetus from the outside for the women’s national team. With Alexander Schriebl, we have found a team leader who recently contributed to a successful development in Bergheim in a short time. We are convinced that with the way he sees football, he will provide a significant impulse for the further development of the women’s national team.”
Schriebl's first match in charge will be a UEFA Women’s Nations League home game against Scotland on February 21, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Austrian women's team as they aim to build on their recent successes, including qualifying for their second consecutive UEFA European Championship under Fuhrmann's leadership.
