Bernische SP sends Flavia Wasserfallen into the race
National Councilor Flavia Wasserfallen is to defend the seat of the Bernese SP in the Council of States in 2023. She was unanimously nominated at the cantonal party conference in Bern on Wednesday evening.
Incumbent Hans Stöckli is no longer standing for re-election after twelve years. The 43-year-old Wasserfallen had been proposed to the party congress by the management.
The political scientist, board member and mother of three lives in Bern. From 2002 to 2012 she was a member of the cantonal parliament, from 2012 to 2018 she was co-secretary general of SP Switzerland. She has been a member of the National Council since May 2018.
Both Bern seats in the Council of States were in bourgeois hands for decades. That changed in 2003 when Simonetta Sommaruga captured a seat for the SP. Since then, the party has defended its seat in the small chamber, apart from an interruption of several months.
Federal Councilor Sommaruga reminded the comrades that she herself was nominated for the Council of States almost 20 years ago, on April 29, 2003.
