Best Taiwanese Movies from the 90s, Ranked
Looking for a Taiwanese movie to watch? These ones from the 90s should be on your list.
Taiwanese movies have been big for international movie lovers for years, although they have been relatively unknown in the broader entertainment world. The dramas coming out of the country, too, remain popular throughout Asia and the world, showing that there is a growing market for Taiwanese entertainment out there.
However, one of the biggest eras in Taiwanese cinema is the 90s. The big directors all became active during the late-80s and 90s, building a chunk of their filmography during the decade before the 2000s hit. The Taiwanese New Wave of movies came before the 90s, but the second round of movies under this classification was released during this defining decade, establishing unique aesthetics to the country’s national cinema and depicting the everyday struggles of individuals. Ang Lee, considered a second New Wave director, emerged on the scene at this time. That said, these are the best Taiwanese movies from the nineties ranked.
