Brazil's Education Performance still below Pre-Pandemic Levels
The 2023 Ideb (Basic Education Development Index), which is Brazil's primary measure of the quality of its basic education system, indicates that the country's educational performance remains below pre-pandemic levels.
While there has been a slight improvement in the indices for the early years of primary and secondary education, there has been a minor decline in the final years of primary education.
Despite some progress since 2021, the overall learning outcomes in Portuguese and math across all three evaluated stages—5th grade (early years), 9th grade (final years) of primary education, and secondary education—still fall short of pre-pandemic standards.
The Ideb score is determined by combining two key factors: the school approval rate and the average student performance in assessments of math and Portuguese. The data is compiled and analyzed by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research, an organization affiliated with Brazil's Ministry of Education.
