Brown Bear Sightings Are Becoming More Frequent
A sighting of a brown bear occurred on Saturday within the vicinity of Aggtelek National Park in northern Hungary, situated between the villages of Kánó and Felsőtelekes, as stated on the park's official website.
According to the park's management, the wildlife camera mounted on a spreader managed to capture an image of the animal. They also mentioned that stray bears, which occasionally venture into Hungarian territory, are regular visitors to hunting facilities.
At present, no further information regarding the bear's movements is available, as confirmed by the park's management.
In recent times, there has been an increasing number of brown bear sightings in the area. In 2019, for instance, the national park's camera recorded the presence of a bear. A year later, another bear was observed strolling on a surveillance camera in the city of Miskolc.
However, the bear that garnered the most attention was IWO, which arrived in Hungary from Poland in 2015, sporting a beacon on its neck.
Additionally, reports surfaced in March of a brown bear being spotted within the national park's vicinity.
Moreover, wildlife cameras installed in the Bükk Mountains have recorded the presence of another bear on multiple occasions recently. The company responsible for managing the state forests in the area has urged caution to all individuals walking in the forest blocks of Bükk, emphasizing the importance of personal safety.
While the likelihood of encountering a bear while hiking is relatively low, experts still advise hikers to adhere to marked hiking trails and, if possible, avoid hunting facilities, considering that the bear within Aggtelek National Park was spotted near one.
Brown bears are a highly protected species. According to experts, the regular migration of individual bears to northern Hungary can be attributed to the increasing population in their natural habitat in Slovakia. Before the current sightings, in early May, a wildlife camera on the outskirts of Lucfalva, a village in northern Hungary, captured footage of a mother bear accompanied by her two-year-old cub.
