Bulgaria’s school year starts with a shortage of 1200 teachers
Bulgaria is facing a significant shortage of teachers as the new school year approaches, with approximately 1,200 positions still unfilled across the country. This includes around 200 vacancies in Sofia and nearly 1,000 in other regions. Assen Alexandrov, chairman of the Association of Directors in Secondary Education, highlighted the challenge of filling these positions in time.
Typically, when teachers retire at the end of the school year, their replacements are selected by June or July. However, this year, the process has been more difficult, especially in subjects like mathematics, computer science, Bulgarian language and literature, foreign languages, and the sciences.
Alexandrov also noted the disparity in job interest, pointing out that there are ten times more candidates for customs officer positions than for teaching roles, underscoring the challenge of attracting new educators to the profession.
