Chebet Desires to Capture World Title and Enhance Her Already Distinguished Legacy
Visualizing herself competing against a formidable field in the women's 5000m race at the upcoming World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Beatrice Chebet's ultimate objective is to secure the elusive world title, an essential gem that has yet to adorn her already sparkling achievements.
Chebet has enjoyed a splendid season thus far, and clinching the world title would undoubtedly be the pinnacle of her accomplishments. She currently holds the prestigious titles of Commonwealth Games champion, World Cross-country champion, and National Champion. However, the World title remains a notable omission from her impressive resume, and she aspires to rectify that this season.
"While I would be content with a podium finish in Budapest this year, my primary aim is the gold medal. Nevertheless, I will be grateful for any medal I am able to achieve there," expressed Chebet, as quoted by World Athletics.
Her place in the Budapest competition is already secured due to her triumph in the 2022 Wanda Diamond League, contingent upon her selection by Athletics Kenya. Chebet is well aware of the formidable competition that awaits her, including Ethiopian athletes and some of her fellow Kenyan compatriots.
Defending champion Gudaf Tsegay and Letesenbet Gidey, both hailing from Ethiopia, pose as Chebet's closest contenders. Tsegay kick-started her season with a victory at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat and is diligently preparing to defend her title. On the other hand, Gidey holds the world record and appeared poised to surpass Chebet for the world cross-country title in Bathurst, but unfortunately stumbled in the final stages.
The silver medalist from the previous world championships in the 5000m category is also progressing well. She recaptured the World Cross-country title in February by vanquishing a formidable field in the women's senior race at the World Cross-country championships in Australia.
Following her cross-country success, the 23-year-old shifted her focus to the track, triumphing in the women's 5000m race at the Kip Keino Classic, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, on May 13.
Chebet's participation in the Diamond League Meetings in Oslo, Silesia, and London has been confirmed prior to her arrival at the World Championships, scheduled to take place from August 19 to 27.
"My training is progressing well. I am putting in great effort and praying for good health and smooth proceedings in every aspect. In my races this year, I will carefully observe and hope for continual progress. With proper training, I am confident that everything will go well," she affirmed.
