Children's Film Festival Kicks Off in Amsterdam
The Cinekid children's film festival officially opens this Sunday afternoon in Amsterdam, featuring the world premiere of the Dutch animated film Victor Vleermuis. The film will debut at Pathé Amsterdam-Noord, attended by the cast and crew. Directed by Patrick Raats, known for the successful Woezel & Pip series, Victor Vleermuis tells the story of a sensitive and musical bat named Victor, who faces bullying from his family due to his fear of the dark. As he navigates his feelings for a bird—bats' sworn enemy—Victor finds himself an outcast. However, love ultimately empowers him to confront his fears and embrace his true self. The film features voice performances by Soy Kroon, Stephanie van Eer, and Fedja van Huêt.
Running until Sunday, November 3, Cinekid Festival 2024 will showcase films in over 40 cinemas across the Netherlands, claiming the title of the world's largest film and media festival for children. While the opening film premieres this weekend, the festival's activities in Amsterdam will commence on Saturday, October 26, coinciding with the autumn holiday in the capital, which starts later than in other regions of the country.
This year, Cinekid will also present a new short film by the acclaimed director trio Job, Joris, and Marieke. Titled Quotum, the three-minute film explores a world where every citizen must use an app to track their CO2 emissions. The narrative takes a turn when the consequences of exceeding one's quota become apparent, with Carice van Houten lending her voice to the app.
The festival aims to inspire children across the Netherlands through film, fostering connections with themselves and others. According to the organizers, “high-quality films and media are an essential tool for maintaining children's natural curiosity and openness to the world.” Cinekid believes that films can enhance children's understanding of the challenges they may face as individuals and as members of society, making it a vital platform for young audiences.
