Christian Louboutin opens a luxury hotel in Portugal
Vermelho, the designer's first hospitality project, has just opened in the sleepy town of Melides
Holidays don't come much more fashionable than Christian Louboutin's first hospitality project: Vermelho, a boutique hotel deep in southern Portugal's Alentejo region. The 13-room hideaway, set in the small village of Melides, is a heavenly homage to the designer's legendary work, with touches of his signature red adorning tiles, doorways and furniture. Even the name of the hotel translates as 'red' in Portuguese.
"Many people have the fantasy of designing or owning a hotel," Louboutin says. "I like to make my dreams a reality." Vermelho was brought to life in collaboration with architect Madalena Caiado (with whom Louboutin worked on his Lisbon home) and his long-time friend, the designer Carolina Irving, who added warm textiles and interior flair.
A showcase for Louboutin's eclectic, maximalist aesthetic, the design is intimate, warm and vibrant, complete with his own personally sourced furniture, art and ceramics.
