Claudia Alencar has made a triumphant return to acting after spending six months at the hospital due to complications from a bacterial infection. The 74-year-old actress has joined the cast of the film King Lear, where she will portray the queen. This production is a modern take on William Shakespeare's classic, directed by English filmmaker Quentim Lewis.
In an interview with Quem, Claudia expressed her joy at returning to the screen. "It feels like I never stopped. Even in the hospital, I kept studying and reading. Now, I have the challenge of playing Queen Lear, a character who is gradually becoming decadent. It’s a reward to be able to perform Shakespeare after so many months in that ‘benign confinement’ of the hospital," she shared.
The film, while rooted in Shakespeare's narrative, is set in Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro, where the protagonist is depicted as a queen and the soldiers are members of the local militia. Claudia noted, "The modernity of Shakespeare's text is astonishing. He addresses issues like corrupt rulers, deceitful people, and the treatment of the elderly—problems that persist from his time to ours. Quentin Lewis has given the story a contemporary twist, yet it stays true to the original dramaturgy of King Lear."
Claudia's hospitalization began in December of last year, and she was only discharged in June, specifically, on June 21. She was hospitalized following a surgical revision of a lumbosacral spine arthrodesis (L4-S1) that had been performed on June 13. She was finally discharged on July 31.
