Colorful Array of Carnival Activities at Lake Balaton
Visitors to Lake Balaton can look forward to a vibrant carnival season filled with a diverse range of activities, including festivals, balls, costume parades, cycling tours, and car shows, as announced by the Balaton Tourism Association. This year, at least thirty carnival events and winter balls are set to attract tourists to the “Hungarian sea.”
The upcoming weeks will feature a lively program of activities that promise to enhance the winter turnover for local restaurants and hotels. Tamás Fekete, vice-president of the Balaton Tourism Association, emphasized that better utilization of the winter season can help reduce seasonal fluctuations, stabilize the local economy, and create more permanent jobs in the region.
Among the highlights of the carnival season are significant culinary events, such as the Révfülöpi Rianás and the Keszthely Carnival, both taking place on February 22.
Sports enthusiasts can participate in the Balaton Bike Carnival on the same day in Balatonfüred, featuring a parade of costumed cyclists. This sixth edition of the annual winter cycling tour showcases the possibility of cycling around Lake Balaton year-round.
Car enthusiasts will also find something to enjoy at the car carnival in Balatonlelle, where vehicles will be creatively “dressed up.” Additionally, the Fonyód Winter Parade on February 22 will offer a farewell to winter with masked fire jugglers, concerts, and a gastro courtyard, drawing inspiration from the famous Mohács Busó Carnival.
Most of the events in the region are part of the Balaton “1000 Reasons to Visit Lake Balaton” campaign, which encourages visitors to explore the area outside of the high season. Péter Princzinger, CEO of VisitBalaton365, noted that these programs demonstrate the region's year-round attractions.
The carnival activities at Lake Balaton promise a colorful and engaging experience for visitors, showcasing the region's ability to offer diverse attractions throughout the year. With a mix of culinary delights, sports events, and festive celebrations, Lake Balaton is set to become a lively destination this winter.
