Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8, 2022, and Prince Charles became the sovereign: King Charles III. The official coronation of Charles III and Camilla, as king and queen consort, will take place on May 6, 2023 at Westminster Abbey in London. The last coronation ceremony took place in 1953, so how will this one in 2023 look like? It turns out Charles III might just do a few things differently.

The coronation will be by the book (literally)
The Liber Regalis, or Royal Book, is a manuscript created in 1382 that describes how a coronation should be organized and run.

It’s unknown who the book was actually created for, since coronations have been taking place at Westminster Abbey since 1066. Though we do know it was put together before the coronation of King Richard II and Queen Anne of Bohemia.

The steps
The book details the steps of the ceremony, which include presenting the monarch to the people, known as the Recognition. This is then followed by promises made to the subjects and God, a step known as the Oath. Read More…
