Cruelty towards pigs in Polish farms. The results of the European investigation
The Compassion in World Farming Foundation has published the results of the investigation showing the dramatic conditions in 16 industrial pig farms in Poland, Italy, Spain and France. It is estimated that such a terrible standard of living is about 85% of people's daily lives. dungeon in Europe.
The shocking material showed that sows on Polish farms spend almost half of their adult lives in cages not much larger than them, which prevents them from freely changing positions. As a result of prolonged standing in one position on a hard surface, sows often suffer from severe, necrotic pressure ulcers. Animals are kept in extreme dirt, lying in their own excrement, which not only increases the risk of infection, but is also a huge inconvenience and is contrary to their natural behavior. The sows showed signs of extreme anguish and starvation, such as continual biting of the cage bars or sham chewing (chewing the air). Farm conditions also prevent sows from interacting with piglets that cannot meet basic species needs such as the protection of the young.
It is worth emphasizing that the dramatic conditions for breeding pigs do not differ depending on whether the farm supplies ordinary pork producers or premium products such as Parma ham.
Compassion in World Farming Polska sent a report on the investigation along with the scientific opinion of dr hab. prof. UP Marcin Urbaniak to Minister Henryk Kowalczyk. The organization appeals to the Polish minister of agriculture to put pressure on the European Union to keep its promise to ban cage farming. In 2021, the European Commission made a public commitment to end the cage age, in response to the European Citizens' Initiative "End the Cage Age" chaired by Compassion in World Farming. A total of 1.4 million verified signatures were collected then, which made it the third most willingly signed European initiative in Poland since 2012.
As emphasized by MaÅ‚gorzata Szadkowska, president of Compassion Polska and a member of the founding committee of the above-mentioned European Citizens' Initiative, it is imperative to end the protracted suffering of animals in industrial livestock. Read More…
