Cunning boss praises staff to trick them into working harder
Declan Henry, a sly and cunning boss, has perfected the art of motivating his employees by heaping praise on them, knowing very well that it will encourage them to double their efforts. Declan, in his twisted genius, believes that telling his staff they are doing a great job, even when they are not, will inspire them to enthusiastically embrace their mediocrity and work even harder at it, resulting in a net productivity gain.
Declan recounts a few instances where his ingenious method has proven successful. Bill, an employee who had been off sick for three weeks, was inspired to return to work after receiving an email from Declan, praising him for being the employee of the month. Despite the fact that Bill spent most of his day dangling his tie in his tea, Declan considered it a victory.
Emma, another employee, was commended for her public speaking skills, which prompted her to volunteer for the next big sales presentation. Although it was still painful to watch and she didn't vomit on the floor this time, Declan considered it progress.
Nikki, who was instrumental in launching the brochure, was also praised for her efforts. Although Declan was the one who actually launched it, Nikki now regularly stays at her desk until seven, much to the delight of her cunning boss.
Employee Nikki Hollis had this to say about Declan's praise: "Declan is so inspiring. I lied to my boyfriend that he's great in bed, and now we're doing it loads. I didn't have an orgasm five times last night!"
While Declan's manipulative tactics may seem unethical, they have proven to be an effective way to boost employee performance. So, the next time your boss praises you for a job well done, be sure to question if it's genuine praise or if they're just trying to trick you into working harder.
