Czechia and Slovakia Have the Lowest TikTok Usage in the EU
In the Czech Republic, two million people use TikTok, but this translates to one of the lowest penetration rates in the EU. Despite TikTok’s massive global presence, with an estimated 1.5 billion monthly active users worldwide, Facebook remains the leader with over three billion users.
According to the Digital Services Regulation, TikTok had an average of 142 million active users per month in the EU from last August to this January.
In the US, TikTok faces significant challenges due to national security concerns. The US Justice Department has defended legislation that could either ban TikTok or force it to sell its US assets by January 19, 2025. TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, is contesting this law in a US appeals court.
TikTok is developing a feature called “Sound Search,” similar to Shazam. This tool allows users to identify songs by singing, humming, or playing them. Given TikTok’s video-centric nature, the app will also display popular videos featuring the identified song. Interestingly, this feature might also recognize popular sounds and memes, expanding its utility beyond just music identification.
While TikTok enjoys vast popularity globally, its penetration varies significantly across the EU, with Czechia and Slovakia showing the lowest usage rates. Simultaneously, TikTok navigates regulatory hurdles in the US and continues to innovate with new features like Sound Search, maintaining its relevance and appeal in the dynamic social media landscape.
