Discussion over snap elections in Greece heats up
The national elections are due in one year’s time but soaring prices combined with a difficult economic situation are piling pressure on the ruling New Democracy government (EPP) to call snap elections.
“I have repeated many times that my intention is to run the country until the end of my mandate because I believe that this is institutionally correct […] At the same time, however, I have said that, yes, a prolonged pre-election period with great controversy is definitely something that the country does not need”, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told news website capital.gr in an interview.
Meanwhile, main opposition leftist Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras called on Mitsotakis to announce an election date for September and appoint a caretaker interior minister from now, to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
In light of the ongoing escalation with Turkey, Tsipras also said the government should also put the National Council of Foreign Policy on alert “so that all political forces are fully aware of the developments in our national issues throughout the pre-election period”.
The fresh escalation with Turkey will be discussed at the EU summit this week in Brussels, and EU leaders are expected to condemn once again Ankara’s provocations in the eastern Mediterranean. Read More...
