Donald Trump slams 'corrupt dictatorship' Iran in 'America First' speech to UN

Donald Trump branded Iran a “corrupt dictatorship” as he vowed to blast the regime with fresh oil sanctions.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the US President accused Iran of sowing chaos, death and destruction.

And he reinforced his 'America First' project, insisting the US rejected the "ideology of globalism."

Trump slammed the Iran Nuclear Deal, from which he withdrew earlier this year, as “horrible”.

And he vowed to resume oil sanctions on Iran from November 5, with more sanctions to follow.

He went on to warn Syria’s Assad regime that the US would “respond” if they used chemical weapons.

A year on from branding Kim Jong Un a “rocket man on a suicide mission”, Trump praised the North Koren dictator.

He applauded Kim’s courage in taking some steps to disarm, but said much work needed to be done and sanctions must remain in place on North Korea until it denuclearises.

"The missiles and rockets are no longer flying in every direction, nuclear testing has stopped, some military facilities are already being dismantled," Trump said.

"I would like to thank Chairman Kim for his courage and for the steps he has taken, though much work remains to be done," Trump said. "The sanctions will stay in place until denuclearisation occurs."

Trump's remarks on North Korea were dramatically different to those in his speech last year at the U.N. assembly, when he threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea and mocked the North Korean leader as "Rocket Man" on a "suicide mission."

Trump compared U.S. relations with Iran to what he called improved ties with North Korea.

"Iran's leaders sow chaos, death and destruction," Trump said. "They do not respect their neighbours or borders or the sovereign rights of nations."

He went on to warn delegates the US would only give foreign aid in future to those who respect and are friends with the US.

And he blasted the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), from which Trump withdrew earlier this year, branding it a “grave embarrassment” to the UN, “shielding egregious human rights abusers, while bashing America and its many friends.”

He said: “We will not return, until real reform is enacted.”

And he criticised the International Criminal Court (ICC), vowing the US would provide no support or recognition to the body.

“As far as the United States is concerned,” he said, “the ICC has no jurisdiction, no legitimacy and no authority.

“The ICC claims near universal jurisdiction over the citizens of every country, violating all principles of fairness, justice and due process.

“We will never surrender America’s sovereignty to an unelected, unaccountable global bureaucracy.

“America is governed by Americans, we reject the ideology of globalism and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism”
