Enlightened religious discourse vital in facing destructive extremist thought: Egypt's President

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed that enlightened religious discourse is a most important element in facing destructive extremist thought

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed on Wednesday that enlightened religious discourse is a most important element in facing destructive extremist thought.

Sisi made the remarks in a speech during a celebration of Laylat Al-Qadr (The Night of Decree), which is a holy night in the fasting month of Ramadan, when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

President Sisi extended profound greetings on the Night of Decree to the Arab and Egyptian people, praying to God that “we get inspired by the holy Ramadan month to consolidate moral and humanitarian values.”

Sisi affirmed the necessity of understanding the meanings and noble objectives of the holy Quran, which he said endorse the interests of the entire mankind.

He paid tribute to the faithful scholars of Al-Azhar and Religious Endowments Ministry, saying that he looks forward to seeing a promising generation of young scholars and intellectual imams.

“I look forward to seeing a promising generation of young scholars and intellectual imams, who contribute to addressing today's issues with an understanding of today's reality and updates and while maintaining religious principles,” he stated.

Addressing scholars, Sisi said: “Keep up your serious efforts and commendable endeavors to spread true religion, correct religious misconceptions, and introduce the true essence of Islam that highlights the meanings of mercy, tolerance, cooperation, and contemplation.”

He added that he looks forward to further efforts and continued work to spread true awareness of the issues of the religion and homeland to achieve a better future for the current and next generations.

Further efforts are needed “to enhance our main goal, which is to preserve the essence of the religion and spread awareness among youth to realize the dangers of extremist thought and the extent of challenges facing us,” Sisi said.

“I invite you all to continue vigorously to build the future of this country in light of an enlightened understanding of the purposes and greatness of the religion and its emphasis on the necessity of hard work, dedication, sincerity, cooperation, tolerance and national solidarity,” the president added.

Sisi, during the celebration, honored a number of winners of the International Qur'an Recitation Competition. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli a number of ministers and senior officials attended the celebration.

During the celebration, Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed Tayyeb delivered a speech, during which he hailed the Quran as “a divine book that guides all of humanity”.

“The sanctity of Quran would not harmed by the tampering of the lowly people and their ilk, who belong to extremist political parties in countries that need to adopt the morals of the Quran,” he said.

Tayyeb shed light on the "abyssal gap" between “freedom of expression and freedom of profanity and between the culture of civilization and the law of the jungle.”

He also extended greetings to the heroic people of Palestine for their steadfastness and determination to guard and defend Al-Aqsa Mosque. Read More...
