Expanding One RDR2 Side Quest Will Improve Red Dead Redemption 3

Red Dead Redemption 3 can improve on RDR2 in several ways, and one underused mechanic in particular needs much better treatment in the next game.
Red Dead Redemption 3 would benefit from expanding the role of one of Red Dead Redemption 2's most fun side activities. Although RDR2 offered a lot of things for players to do, one of the best options ended up being scarce and easily exhausted. Fixing this issue would help the next game in the series remain satisfying until the end credits.
The Red Dead Redemption games give players a big wild west sandbox to run around in, full of encounters and side activities. Red Dead Redemption 2 took this approach even further than the first game. A player could play for hours without touching the main story and still not get bored because of everything that Arthur can do. From playing poker to committing robberies, the amount of freedom that the game gives the player is astounding. Even if Red Dead Redemption 3 is another prequel, it is likely to follow in this vein, making sure that the player always has a way to pass time between missions.
Red Dead Redemption 2's Duels Are Fun, But Scarce
Dueling was a significant mechanic in Red Dead Redemption, and it worked just like it does in old cowboy movies. The protagonist and their opponent stand facing each other, and the quickest on the draw to disarm or kill their opponent wins. It's a fun side activity, since the player needs good timing and aim in order to win. Red Dead Redemption 2 even has an entire side quest revolving around duels with infamous gunslingers and outlaws.
Unfortunately, Red Dead Redemption 2 only has a finite amount of duels, and outside the gunslinger side quest, they're few and far between. A couple appear during the main plot, with the rest taking place in random encounters. Once they have all been exhausted, the player won't be able to use Red Dead Redemption 2's pistols and revolvers to duel any longer outside replaying missions through the pause menu. It's disappointing, especially after the first game had so many more duels in it.
The small amount of duels in Red Dead Redemption 2 is doubly disappointing considering that duels are one of the landmark tropes of the Western genre. The image of two outlaws, lawmen, or anywhere in between, training their gazes on each other as they prepare to draw is an iconic one that is instantly recognizable.
