Facebook is apparently testing a feature that will allow you to delete messages from its messenger service. This is likely to be well-received by anyone who has ever drunk alcohol.
The change was spotted by eagle-eyed Jane Wong, who has recently discovered other app updates to both Facebook and Instagram. Wong previously spotted Facebook's new dating app, which is currently rolling out to a small number of its users.
Wong posted a screenshot to Twitter which shows the feature. Users will long press on a message and be presented with an "unsend" option. There's also delete option, which is already part of the app, but it only removes messages from your inbox.
It's not clear when Facebook might roll this update out to users, but Wong also noted that there were also changes in the visual look of Messenger. Notably a ghastly graduated design which seems to be customisable.
Perhaps the most surprising part of this is how long it's taken to implement the feature. WhatsApp first added message deletion in late 2017.
The facebook-owned service also got an upgrade earlier this year allowing users to delete messages one hour, eight minutes and sixteen seconds after they were sent. Originally it allowed you only seven minutes to retract your missives.
It's reasonable to assume that the Facebook feature will operate along similar lines, with an hour-long window to remove messages for all users.
Facebook is currently in the midst of a year it would presumably like to remove from its history. The company we recently forced to admit that 30 million users were affected by a recent security failure.
