Federal Government announces plans to unbundle Federal Unity Colleges
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to unbundle the 115 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) across the country into separate basic and secondary schools. This move, according to the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, is part of a broader effort aligned with the National Policy on Education (NPE). The announcement was made during the Annual General Meeting of Principals of Unity Colleges held in Abuja, under the theme "Entrepreneurship Education: A Panacea for Self-Reliance and National Development."
The unbundling is expected to bring about several benefits, including improved funding, enhanced infrastructure, better teacher welfare, and increased employment opportunities. Dr. Sununu emphasized the government's commitment to achieving this transformation with support from relevant agencies in the shortest possible time.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship education as a critical tool for addressing unemployment, equipping students with the skills and mindset to become self-reliant and contribute to national development. He urged the Principals of these schools to collaborate in improving the educational environment, combat social vices, and cooperate with host communities to ensure security and progress within the schools.
