First Science Club to Launch in San Martín Jilotepeque
Guatemala is set to establish its first Science Club in San Martín Jilotepeque, Chimaltenango, as part of a broader strategy to enhance knowledge and technology under the National Development Policy. This initiative was announced by the Vice President of the Republic, Karin Herrera, during the reopening of the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat) library in the municipality.
The library’s facilities have undergone significant renovations and now feature internet access to support reading and research activities. The reopening ceremony was attended by notable figures including Álvaro González Ricci, President of Banguat; Gabriela Montenegro, head of the National Secretariat of Science and Technology (Senacyt); and various local authorities.
Vice President Herrera emphasized the importance of fostering interest and participation in science and technology among young Guatemalans. “These clubs are intended to be spaces where children and youth can engage in activities that bring them closer to the professions they might pursue in the future,” Herrera stated.
At the event, Montenegro provided teachers with a guide for conducting scientific experiments in the classroom. This resource is designed to encourage new learning methods that promote curiosity and motivate knowledge through observation, experimentation, participation, and fun.
González Ricci highlighted the rehabilitation of the library as an effort by Banguat to promote culture within communities. “We aim to provide an adequate and pleasant space to foster the habit of reading and research,” he remarked.
Participants in the event engaged in activities such as the Dance of Colors experiment and a robotics rally, illustrating the hands-on and interactive nature of the Science Club’s future endeavors. This initiative is a significant step towards nurturing a new generation of scientifically literate and technologically adept individuals in Guatemala.
