Flu Cases Soar in Switzerland
In the last week of December 2024, Switzerland experienced a significant increase in influenza cases, with 12.71 cases reported per 100,000 people to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). This surge in flu cases began approximately three weeks earlier, indicating a notable wave of influenza activity.
In contrast, the number of reported Covid-19 cases has been on a steady decline, dropping from 7.74 to 5.42 cases per 100,000 people over the last three weeks of December. This suggests that the Covid-19 wave may have passed its peak, with more than twice as many influenza cases recorded compared to Covid-19 in the final week of December.
These trends are also reflected in wastewater analysis across most regions of Switzerland, where respiratory viruses, including influenza and Covid-19, are monitored. At the end of December, approximately 26.4% of the viruses detected were influenza viruses, while 10.9% were coronaviruses. The most frequently detected SARS-CoV-2 variant in wastewater is XEC, which currently accounts for about half of the total SARS-CoV-2 viral load detected.
As the flu season progresses, health authorities are likely to continue monitoring these trends closely to manage public health effectively.
