Four young children and an adult were injured in a brutal knife attack that occurred in the Annecy, southeastern France
According to the police, the assailant was identified as a 31-year-old Syrian national who had sought asylum. Surprisingly, he possessed Swedish identity documents and a Swedish driving license, entered France legally, and was not previously known to security agencies.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, as reported by an investigative source. At this stage, anti-terrorism authorities have not been involved in leading the investigation. Following the incident, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, accompanied by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, traveled to Annecy. Darmanin confirmed the arrest of the attacker through a tweet, while news footage showed the apprehension of the individual by several policemen in a park.
Police stated that two children and one adult were in critical condition, while the injuries of the other two children were less severe. The age range of the wounded children was between 22 months and 3 years. It was later revealed that one of the injured children was a British national, as mentioned by British Foreign Minister James Cleverly.
Expressing his condolences, French President Emmanuel Macron took to Twitter, describing the victims' condition as life-threatening and denouncing the attack as "an act of absolute cowardice." Witnesses recalled the horrific scene, with one mentioning that at least one of the injured children had been in a stroller. The incident took place around 7:45 a.m. GMT in a serene lakeside park known as Le Paquier, nestled in the scenic French Alps.
According to Ferdinand, a witness interviewed by BFM TV, the assailant suddenly appeared in the playground, shouting, and then targeted the strollers, repeatedly attacking the defenseless little ones with his knife. The shocking nature of the attack caused panic, with mothers crying and people fleeing from the area, as recounted by George, the owner of a nearby restaurant.
Le Paquier park, typically known for its tranquility and frequented by tourists seeking breathtaking views of Lake Annecy and the surrounding mountains, has now become the site of a horrifying incident. Yohan, an employee at an ice cream parlor opposite the park, expressed his disbelief, noting that the area is usually bustling with around 15 toddlers in the morning, creating a fantastic atmosphere for families and caregivers.
In recent months, France has been shaken by a series of violent incidents, including the tragic stabbing of a nurse in the northern town of Reims. Additionally, an intoxicated driver accidentally caused the deaths of three policemen. President Macron has condemned these events as a part of a "de-civilization process" in the country, while opposition lawmakers criticize the government for its perceived leniency regarding law and order.
