Heatwave returns: How to protect yourself from loo, prevent heatstrokes

As Delhi battles heatwave, here are some measures you must take to protect yourself from its woes and prevent heatstroke.

With the temperature soaring high in Delhi and other northern parts of the country, it is important for you to pay attention to your health. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave in Delhi. As per their prediction, Delhiites are likely to face extreme temperatures in the next few days with the maximum temperature crossing the 46-degrees mark on May 15.

In this scenario, it is important to take several measures in order to prevent yourself from the heatwave and the loo. A person can otherwise get acute dehydration, heat cramps, dizziness or heatstroke as well. Read on as we tell you some of the best ways to protect yourself from the loo and prevent heatstroke.

WHAT IS HEATSTROKE

According to the US-based Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, heatstroke is the most serious heat-related illness. It occurs when the body is not able to control its temperature. The body’s temperature rises rapidly. It is a potential fatal condition. If emergency treatment is not provided, heatstroke can cause death or permanent disability.

The symptoms of heatstroke include high fever, rapid pulse, dizziness, headache, nausea and losing consciousness. According to the guidelines by the National Disaster Management Authority, a person suffering from heatstroke should be taken to a hospital immediately. The victim should be moved to a cooler environment. A cool bath or sponging should also be given to reduce body temperature. The person, however, should not be given any fluids.

HOW TO PREVENT A HEATSTROKE

Prevention, as they say, is better than cure. Here are some of the measures you must take during the ongoing heatwave and loo situation to prevent heatstroke.

Stay hydrated

Firstly and most importantly, stay hydrated! Drink ample of water and other healthy fluids like nimbu paani and coconut water. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, try and drink water as often as possible. If you are travelling, make sure you are carrying a water bottle.

Wear light clothes

To prevent yourself from the brunt of heatwave, it is recommended to wear lightweight and breezy cotton clothes. Avoid wearing heavy fabrics and dark colours as they absorb heat more easily.

Cover your head

This one is really important! If you are stepping out in the sun, do not forget to cover your head with a cloth, hat or umbrella.

Avoid heat exposure

If possible, avoid stepping out during noon when the sun is at its peak. Read More...
