Helsinki Airport Worker Walkout Prompts Flight Cancellations and Delays
A two-hour work stoppage by ground staff workers at Helsinki Airport on Monday afternoon has resulted in numerous flight cancellations and delays, significantly impacting operations throughout the day. The action, involving members of the Finnish Aviation Union (IAU), commenced at 2 PM and was scheduled to conclude at 4:15 PM.
The IAU represents airport employees engaged in various aviation technology and service functions, including roles in aircraft maintenance, catering, and security. In a press release, Finnair, the flag carrier airline, described the walkout as "illegal" and warned that it could have a substantial effect on flights during the afternoon and evening.
By 3 PM, approximately one hour into the work stoppage, at least 17 flights had been cancelled, with many others experiencing delays of up to two hours. Finnair's Communications Manager, Suvi Aaltonen, urged passengers to stay updated through the airline's communications and social media channels. She also noted that the company would reach out directly to passengers regarding any flight cancellations and changes.
The walkout was initiated in response to Finnair's plans to terminate two employees over allegations of disclosing critical safety information. A company hearing regarding these allegations was set to begin at 2 PM, coinciding with the start of the protest. The union contends that there are no valid grounds for the dismissal of the two employees.
As the situation develops, passengers are advised to check for updates and remain in contact with the airline for the latest information regarding their flights. The work stoppage highlights ongoing tensions within the aviation sector, particularly concerning employee rights and safety protocols.
