How to Use WhatsApp's Secret Code for Chat Lock
WhatsApp has introduced a Chat Lock feature for iPhones and both high-end and budget Android phones, enhancing the privacy of your conversations. While this feature allows you to lock specific chats, it does have a limitation: locked chats appear in a Locked Chats folder at the top of your chat list, which could draw unwanted attention from anyone with access to your phone. To address this concern, WhatsApp offers a Secret Code feature that adds an extra layer of privacy. Here’s how to use it.
What Does the Secret Code Do?
The Secret Code allows you to set a unique password for your locked chats, improving their privacy. Once activated, you can hide the Locked Chats folder from your chat list. To access your locked chats, you will need to enter the Secret Code in the search bar. If someone tries to access your locked chats without knowing the code, those chats will remain hidden.
How to Set Up the Secret Code
Before you can set up a Secret Code, you need to lock your chats on WhatsApp. Once you have done that, follow these steps to set up your Secret Code:
- Launch WhatsApp and open the Locked Chats folder.
- Tap the overflow menu (the three vertical dots) in the upper-right corner of the page.
- Select "Chat lock settings."
- Tap "Secret code."
- Enter a code that can include letters or emojis, but make sure it’s something you can remember.
- Tap "Next" and re-enter your Secret Code.
- If you see the message "Secret codes match," select "Done."
Your Secret Code is now set up. You can also choose to hide your locked chats from the chat list. To do this, return to the Chat lock settings page and toggle the option next to "Hide locked chats." When you want to view your locked chats, simply enter your Secret Code in the Chats tab.
Limitations of WhatsApp's Secret Code Feature
While the Secret Code provides an additional layer of privacy, it does come with some limitations. Accessing locked chats becomes more cumbersome, as you need to enter the code each time you want to view them, which can be inconvenient for frequent users. Additionally, if someone knows your Secret Code, they can bypass this security measure. Therefore, it’s advisable to use other security features, such as two-factor authentication, for enhanced protection.
Another limitation is that if you forget your Secret Code, you will need to clear all your locked chats to regain access, which could result in the loss of data that hasn’t been backed up.
What to Do If You Forget Your Secret Code
WhatsApp recommends choosing a memorable Secret Code to avoid forgetting it. However, if you do forget, you can unlock and clear your locked chats by navigating to Settings > Privacy > Chat lock > Unlock and clear locked chats.
Other Ways to Keep WhatsApp Chats Private
Setting up a Secret Code and locking your chats is an excellent option for users primarily on mobile devices. However, if you use WhatsApp on a desktop or laptop, the Secret Code feature and chat-locking functionality are not available. Instead, you can archive your chats on WhatsApp's web platforms to reduce their visibility. Archived chats remain accessible but are hidden from the main chat list, making it harder for others to find them.
By utilizing the Secret Code feature and other privacy measures, you can enhance the security of your WhatsApp conversations and keep your personal information safe.
