Hungary Well Prepared to Receive Close to 900,000 Refugees From Ukraine, Official Says
Hungary has expressed readiness to receive up to 900,000 Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war in their country.
Chief Security Advisor György Bakondi has announced that as of noon on Wednesday, March 16, Hungary has accepted more than 432,000 refugees, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Bakondi also added that this increase in the number of Ukrainian refugees means that there is a growing need for different organisations to coordinate their efforts.
“Hungary must continue supporting Transcarpathia Hungarians because their region has seen a big influx of people from eastern Ukraine who have lost everything,” he pointed in this regard.
In addition, aid centres set up on the Hungary-Ukraine border are well prepared to accommodate the growing number of refugees fleeing Ukraine in the coming days, the Chief Security Advisor claims.
A statement issued by the Hungarian government on March 18 revealed that Secretary of State for Church and Minority Relations Miklós Soltész, after visiting Barabás and Beregsurány at the border, told MTI that aid workers and police were waiting for a growing number of refugees to leave Transcarpathia shortly, after a calmer situation in the recent days.
“Donations received from all over Hungary have filled storage capacities at aid centres and now everyone who wants to send contributions are asked to forward non-perishable food directly to a central warehouse in Aranyosapáti,” he also noted.
On Thursday, March 17, First Lady Anita Herczegh, a Hungarian Charity Malta goodwill ambassador, also visited the aid centre in Beregsurány.
She praised the Hungarians’ entire initiative to help Ukrainian refugees, adding that communities in neighbouring villages had joined forces in the early days of the war and that this was further exacerbated by the arrival of aid organisations.
On the other hand, the head of the working group for the Hungarian Charity Malta crisis management stressed that the first psychological help was also being provided in Beregsurány, which is in great demand by refugees already traumatised by the war. Read More...
