In Russia, they learned how to print magnets
Russian scientists from NUST MISIS have proposed a new method for creating magnets. Now they can be printed on a 3D printer and set controlled properties.
A special apparatus has been created into which it is possible to "refill" the materials from which the future magnet will be made. Next, a laser with a power of 150-200 W and a scanning speed of 300-700 mm / s, as it were, “builds up” the magnet.
Cons of the old method
The most common magnets are made from neodymium, iron and boron. But the creation of such magnets is a lot of complex technological processes (smelting, crushing, pressing, sintering, machining, magnetization and protective coating).
At the same time, there is a limitation - the impossibility of creating magnets of complex shape. This significantly limits their application in technology.
Advantages of the new method
Printing on a 3D printer allows you to create magnets of complex shapes. The development will also eliminate the number of technological operations by 30% and significantly speed up the production process.
Scientists said that with the help of 3D printing it will be possible to control not only the size and shape of the magnet, but also its properties. At the moment, research is being carried out in the field of "customization" of the properties of magnets. Read More…
