Instagram Update: new parental supervision tools, take a break and nudges

Meta owned photo and video platform Instagram has announced new tools and resources designed to support parents, guardians and teens. Parental supervision tools are being expanded to new countries, along with features that would help teens better manage their time on the platform.
Quest VR
Parental Supervision tools will soon be extended to all Quest VR headsets, where parents can approve or deny the request to purchase made by their kids. Parents can also block specific apps and view all apps owned by the kids. Parents can also block the Quest headset from accessing content from their PCs.
On Instagram parents can now –
- Send invitations to their teens to initiate supervision tools. Initially, only teens could send invitations.
- Set specific times during the day or week when they would like to limit their teen’s use of Instagram.
- See more information when their teen reports an account or post, including who was reported, and the type of report.
Starting this month, these tools will begin rolling out to other countries including the UK, Japan, Australia, Ireland, Canada, France and Germany, with plans to roll out globally before the end of the year.
Time Management
Instagram has released two new features – Nudges and Take a break for better time management of teens. Nudges is one such feature, where teens will be seeing a notification telling them to switch to a different topic if they are repeatedly looking at the same type of content on the ‘explore’ tab. “We designed this new feature because research suggests that nudges can be effective for helping people — especially teens — be more mindful of how they’re using social media in the moment,” says Instagram.
