Islamic State planning nuclear holocaust, says journalist who spent 10 days embedded with terrorist group
His PLAN: Putin goes it alone on Islamic State
During his visits to the Islamic State-controlled cities of Mosul, Iraq and Raqqa, Syria, Todenhöfer was taken care of by UK extremist Jihadi John who became infamous after he appeared in beheading propaganda videos.
Todenhöfer has warned that the west is “drastically underestimating the power of ISIS”, who he called a “nuclear tsunami preparing the largest religious cleansing in history” with plans to kill “several hundred million people”.
“They now control land greater in size than the United Kingdom and are supported by an almost ecstatic enthusiasm the like of which I’ve never encountered before in a war zone,” Todenhöfer wrote in his book.
“Every day hundreds of willing fighters from all over the world come.”
What happened to Jihadi John?
Todenhöfer spent months negotiating his visit with the leader of the group over Skype, and chose to go forward despite brutal videos of journalists being beheaded. However, Todenhöfer did admit to writing his will before the trip.
He said the beheading videos are a part of Islamic State’s strategy to frighten their enemies.
“They are the most brutal and most dangerous enemy I have ever seen in my life,” Todenhöfer said.
“I don’t see anyone who has a real chance to stop them. Only Arabs can stop IS. I came back very pessimistic.”
Islamic State has traditionally shun western media outlets over the years, instead choosing to spread their message across social media networks like Twitter.
But it is believed Todenhöfer, 75, was allowed to visit thanks to his vocal opposition to the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.
During the visit, Todenhöfer was forced to sleep on the floor, and was only allowed his suitcase, backpack and sleeping bag.
“People there live in shellholes, in barracks, in bombed-out houses,” he said.
“I slept on the floor — if I was lucky on a plastic mattress.”
