The Plateau district of Abidjan, the economic heart of Ivory Coast, is undergoing a colorful transformation as vibrant graffiti murals breathe new life into the urban landscape. Once viewed with disdain, graffiti is now gaining acceptance, with artists previously facing prosecution for their work. This shift in perception has led to an explosion of artistic expression on the city’s walls.
The recent "Ivory Graff Graffiti Festival" marked a significant milestone in this cultural evolution, attracting around 40 national and international artists who spent two weeks in November creating stunning murals that stretch over 300 meters. These towering artworks now adorn the exteriors of international hotels and major thoroughfares, turning bland walls into captivating displays of creativity.
Benjamin Le Lieve, president of the festival organizer Graff Ivoire, expressed pride in launching this initiative, which has garnered admiration from passers-by. Many residents have welcomed the artistic revitalization of their city. "It brings a change to the city of Abidjan," remarked Michael Bende, an Ivorian citizen, highlighting the positive impact of the murals on the urban environment.
South African artist Dbongz Mahlathi emphasized the communal aspect of graffiti, stating, "The graffiti I've created isn't for me ... it's for the people who will see it every day." This sentiment reflects the growing recognition of graffiti as a legitimate art form that enhances public spaces and fosters a sense of community pride.
As Abidjan continues to embrace this vibrant art movement, the city is not only transforming its visual identity but also redefining its cultural landscape, making it a more dynamic and engaging place for both residents and visitors.
