Jamie Foxx’s Atlanta-Filmed ‘Back in Action’ is Netflix’s Top U.S. Film Debut
“Back in Action,” the action-comedy film starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, has made a significant impact since its release on January 17, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on Netflix in the United States. The film has also achieved remarkable success internationally, reaching the top spot in at least 85 other countries, according to reports from The Wrap.
Netflix announced that “Back in Action” generated the most views for an opening weekend of an English-language film since 2022’s “The Adam Project,” which featured Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, and Jennifer Garner. This impressive debut highlights the film's widespread appeal and the star power of its lead actors.
In “Back in Action,” Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz portray CIA spies who have left the field to start a family. However, their peaceful life is disrupted when their cover is blown, forcing them to rely on their old tactics. The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Kyle Chandler (known for “Friday Night Lights”), Glenn Close (“Fatal Attraction”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Jamie Demetriou (“Barbie”), McKenna Roberts (“Skyscraper”), and Rylan Jackson (“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”).
This film marks the third collaboration between Foxx and Diaz, a reunion that the Academy Award-winning actor has eagerly anticipated. Foxx expressed his excitement, stating, “A lot of people don’t know this, but after Cameron and I did ‘Any Given Sunday’ and ‘Annie’ together, we became friends in real life — and I’ve been begging her to come play with me again.” He humorously referenced Diaz’s iconic 1998 film, “There’s Something About Mary,” saying, “We all know there’s just something about her…”
“Back in Action” is Jamie Foxx’s second Netflix release following his hospitalization in April 2023. In December 2024, he released the Netflix comedy special “What Had Happened Was,” marking his first stand-up film in over two decades. This return to the spotlight, coupled with the success of “Back in Action,” underscores Foxx’s resilience and enduring popularity in the entertainment industry.
As “Back in Action” continues to dominate the streaming charts, it not only showcases the talents of its stars but also highlights the growing trend of action-comedy films resonating with audiences worldwide.
